Memphis 8-15-07

Well we landed at Memphis International Airport and all I can say is it’s not like the tristate area. In the midst of a heat wave (105) we headed off in our Pontiac grand prix, and preceded to downtown Memphis, past Graceland (which we will be visiting tomorrow), to find a city not all that different from any other semi-depressed city that has lost its industry; much like Scranton except with much better music.

We first made it to Beale St. and I had a pulled bbq pulled pork sandwich for lunch. We then walked/drove around to gain an understanding of the town, checked in, and made our way back to Beale St. to visit the Rock n Soul museum. The museum was filled with fantastic artifacts pertaining to the birth of rock and roll, starting from country and blues and working its way up to the (famed) Beatles. W C Handy, Carl Perkins and Stax Records were of particular interest (to me).

At night Beale St. lights up, literally! Between the neons and motorcycle crowd (Wed) the place was nuts. We grabbed some dinner, I had BBQ ribs, and I felt like crap. As we preceded to meander around it was evident that open container laws apply, like New Orleans, and there is music reverberating from every alley and bar. Primarily blues/rock n roll though as we were leaving I caught wind of an obscene GnR cover band. All for now… check the pics!
